T&T's Wood is on the cusp of judo Olympic qualification

Fol­low­ing the ex­tend­ed coro­n­avirus (COVID-19) lock­downs in Eu­rope, Trinidad and To­ba­go’s lone Olympic Ju­do hope­ful, Gabriel­la Wood, who is based in Scot­land, is prepar­ing to re­turn to com­pe­ti­tion in her quest to qual­i­fy for the Tokyo 2021 Games.

Cur­rent­ly in po­si­tion #68 on the Olympic rank­ing, Gabriel­la holds the Pan Amer­i­can quo­ta spot for the Games. How­ev­er, she must con­tin­ue com­pet­ing to ful­ly se­cure this po­si­tion and qual­i­fy for the Games.

Her jour­ney con­tin­ues as she is sched­uled to com­pete at the Tbil­isi Grand Slam in The Re­pub­lic of Geor­gia from March 26 to 28, fol­lowed by the meets at the An­talya Grand Slam in Turkey from April 1 to 3.

Fol­low­ing these, Gabriel­la plans to com­pete at the Kazan Grand Slam in Rus­sia, the Ju­do World Cham­pi­onships in Hun­gary be­fore the XXXII Olympiad, to be held in Tokyo 2021.

In March, last year, Wood con­sol­i­dat­ed her lead­er­ship po­si­tion in the Pan Amer­i­can Re­gion at the Bar­iloche Pan Amer­i­can Ju­do Open tour­na­ment in Ar­genti­na, where she won a sil­ver medal in the plus-78kg cat­e­go­ry, mov­ing her up to No 63 on the Olympic Rank­ings and No 71 on the World Rank­ings.
