Following the extended coronavirus (COVID-19) lockdowns in Europe, Trinidad and Tobago’s lone Olympic Judo hopeful, Gabriella Wood, who is based in Scotland, is preparing to return to competition in her quest to qualify for the Tokyo 2021 Games.
Currently in position #68 on the Olympic ranking, Gabriella holds the Pan American quota spot for the Games. However, she must continue competing to fully secure this position and qualify for the Games.
Her journey continues as she is scheduled to compete at the Tbilisi Grand Slam in The Republic of Georgia from March 26 to 28, followed by the meets at the Antalya Grand Slam in Turkey from April 1 to 3.
Following these, Gabriella plans to compete at the Kazan Grand Slam in Russia, the Judo World Championships in Hungary before the XXXII Olympiad, to be held in Tokyo 2021.
In March, last year, Wood consolidated her leadership position in the Pan American Region at the Bariloche Pan American Judo Open tournament in Argentina, where she won a silver medal in the plus-78kg category, moving her up to No 63 on the Olympic Rankings and No 71 on the World Rankings.
