Two-time Carifta gold medallist Tafari Waldron prevailed at the inaugural Magdalena Grand Tobago Midnight 10K run in Lowlands, Tobago, over the weekend (October 18-19).
Waldron, who won the Carifta Boys Under-20 5,000 metres title in 2022 and 2023, crossed the line in 31 minutes and 47.8 seconds (31:47.8). The South East Port-of-Spain/Queen's Royal College graduate finished ahead of Christopher Mitchell (32:41.4) and home runner Elvis Turner (35:12.0) of Whim, Tobago.
The 2024 Carifta Boys U-17 3,000m bronze medallist, Isaiah Alder, was fourth (36:40.5) with Jedial Walters (41:51.6), Damian Joseph (42:02.4), Israel Francois (42:27.2) and Jean-Luc Worrell (42:34.0), following behind, respectively.
Alexis Joseph was an impressive winner of the women's race in 40:21.5, leaving April Francis (44:10.6) and Onika Marie Brereton (49:18.1) to take the respective minor places on the podium.
Claire Fortune (53:43.3), Kasheanne Francis (54:35.5), Alesha Barber (55:25.6) and Heqpera Khafra (56:59.6) were the next top finishers.
Held for the first time, the Magdalena Grand Tobago Midnight 10K attracted 334 athletes.
Race organiser, Nigel Bellamy of Bafasports, was elated with the run out, saying that all went well and praised the Tobago public for the enthusiastic support. Bellamy told Guardian Media Sport he is looking forward to the next edition of the race.
