The 12th edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup (50 overs) to be staged in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3, 2022, will be the West Indies' seventh appearance as the representative team for the region.
In the inaugural Women’s World Cup in 1973, the region was represented by Trinidad and Tobago (placed fifth) and Jamaica (placed sixth). The West Indies debuted in the fifth edition of the World Cup in 1993, in England.
Since making their debut in 1993, the West Indies have appeared in six World Cups (they did not participate in the 2000 edition in New Zealand]. They have played 38 matches, won 13, lost 24, and one no result. Their percentage win is 35.13 and overall performances: 1993, sixth; 1997, tenth; 2005, fifth; 2009, sixth; 2013, second; and 2017, sixth.
Their best performance is in the 10th World Cup in India, 2013 where they finished runners-up to Australia. In the group stage, the West Indies edged India on net run rate to finish third behind England and Sri Lanka in Group A.
In the Super Sixes, the West Indies topped the group ahead of second-place Australia who they met in the final. When teams played in the Super Sixes, West Indies won comfortably by 48 runs, however, in the final Australia romped home by 114 runs.
Australia made 259/7 (50 overs) with Jess Cameron top-scoring with 75 and supported by Rachael Haynes' 52, Jodie Fields' 36 not out and Meg Lanning 31. Shaquana Quintyne was picked of the bowlers with 3/27 off 10 overs.
Captain Merissa Aguilleira led the batting for the WI with 23, followed by Deandra Dottin 22 and Kyshona Knight 21 not out as the West Indies were bowled out for 145 in 43.1 overs. Ellyse Perry grabbed 3/19, with support from Megan Schutt 2/38, Lisa Sthalekar 2/20 and Erin Osborne 2/26.
The West Indies enter the 12th ICC World Cup rank seventh ahead of Pakistan and behind Australia, South Africa, England, India, New Zealand and Bangladesh, respectively.
The batting will rest heavily upon the big three, captain Stafanie Taylor (ICC rank 12), Deandra Dottin (ICC rank 16) and Hayley Matthews (ICC rank 31). The ability to bowl out or restrict opponents will rest upon Matthews (ICC rank 14), vice-captain Anisa Mohammed (ICC rank 24), Shakera Selman (ICC rank 27), Shamilia Connell (ICC rank 29) and Taylor (ICC rank 39).
