Zarek Wilson added three gold medals on the penultimate night of competition as T&T remained fourth on the points table at the 38th Carifta Swimming Championship at the National Aquatic Centre, Kingston, Jamaica on Monday night.
Wilson’s three gold medals was a repeat of his treble gold showing on Sunday night to carry his meet tally to seven gold medals ahead of last night’s final events
First up for 12-year-old Wilson, was the 11-12 boys 200m individual medley in 2:24.93 minutes ahead of French Guiana’s Dilan Nunez Green (2:28.42) and fellow T&T entrant Nikoli Blackman (2:30.59)
Wilson then won his second gold of the night when he touched the wall first in the 100m freestyle in 58.59 seconds with Green and Bahamian Marvin Johnson, tied for second in 59.16 and T&T’s Josiah Changer, fourth in 59.91
His seventh first place finish in three days came when he led a one-two T&T finish in the 200m butterfly in two minutes, 23.22 seconds with Blackman, second in 2:25.83 and Bahamian Nigel Forbes, third in 2:26.34.
Kael Yorke added to T&T’s gold tally in the 15-17 boys 200m butterfly when he won in two minutes, 05.88 seconds well ahead of Cayman Islands’ John Bodden (2:09.20) and Suriname’s Ya Touw Ngie Tjouw (2:09.98) with T&T’s Aqeel Joseph, seventh in 2:19.40.
And the 11-12 Mixed freestyle relay quartet of Zoe Anthony, Josiah Changar, Savannah Chee-Wah and Nikoli Blackman added another gold medal for T&T in a new record of four minutes, 08.60 seconds to lower the 4:10.28 set by Jamaica last year.
Bahamas (4:11.29) and Jamaica (4:13.73) were second and third respectively.
In the 11-12 girls 200m individual medley, T&T’s Zoe Anthony (2:36.56) was second behind Bermudan Elan Daley (2:32.40) with Cayman Islands’ Jillian Crooks’ third in 2:39.94 and Savannah Chee-Wah, of T&T seventh in 2:47.53.
And the other T&T bronze came via Caitlyn Look Fong in the 11-12 Girls 200m butterfly in 2:43.79 while team-mate Amelia Rajack was sixth in 2:54.48.
Overall, T&T lies fourth on the points table with 431 well behind leaders Bahamas (605.5) while Guadeloupe (456) and Jamaica (444) were in close proximity.
To close out the top ten were Cayman Islands (388.5), Barbados (284), Martinique (275), Bermuda (245.5), Aruba (104) and French Guiana (102.5).
In terms of medals won, T&T has now bagged 34 (16 gold, 12 silver and six bronze), nine behind Bahamas (17 gold, 18 silver and eight bronze) while Guadeloupe 37 (ten gold, ten silver and 17 bronze); Barbados 24 (10 gold, eight silver and six bronze) and Jamaica 31 (nine gold, ten silver and 12 bronze) round out the top five.
