Wilson splashes to treble more gold

Zarek Wil­son added three gold medals on the penul­ti­mate night of com­pe­ti­tion as T&T re­mained fourth on the points ta­ble at the 38th Carif­ta Swim­ming Cham­pi­onship at the Na­tion­al Aquat­ic Cen­tre, Kingston, Ja­maica on Mon­day night.

Wil­son’s three gold medals was a re­peat of his tre­ble gold show­ing on Sun­day night to car­ry his meet tal­ly to sev­en gold medals ahead of last night’s fi­nal events

First up for 12-year-old Wil­son, was the 11-12 boys 200m in­di­vid­ual med­ley in 2:24.93 min­utes ahead of French Guiana’s Di­lan Nunez Green (2:28.42) and fel­low T&T en­trant Nikoli Black­man (2:30.59)

Wil­son then won his sec­ond gold of the night when he touched the wall first in the 100m freestyle in 58.59 sec­onds with Green and Ba­hami­an Mar­vin John­son, tied for sec­ond in 59.16 and T&T’s Josi­ah Chang­er, fourth in 59.91

His sev­enth first place fin­ish in three days came when he led a one-two T&T fin­ish in the 200m but­ter­fly in two min­utes, 23.22 sec­onds with Black­man, sec­ond in 2:25.83 and Ba­hami­an Nigel Forbes, third in 2:26.34.

Kael Yorke added to T&T’s gold tal­ly in the 15-17 boys 200m but­ter­fly when he won in two min­utes, 05.88 sec­onds well ahead of Cay­man Is­lands’ John Bod­den (2:09.20) and Suri­name’s Ya Touw Ngie Tjouw (2:09.98) with T&T’s Aqeel Joseph, sev­enth in 2:19.40.

And the 11-12 Mixed freestyle re­lay quar­tet of Zoe An­tho­ny, Josi­ah Changar, Sa­van­nah Chee-Wah and Nikoli Black­man added an­oth­er gold medal for T&T in a new record of four min­utes, 08.60 sec­onds to low­er the 4:10.28 set by Ja­maica last year.

Ba­hamas (4:11.29) and Ja­maica (4:13.73) were sec­ond and third re­spec­tive­ly.

In the 11-12 girls 200m in­di­vid­ual med­ley, T&T’s Zoe An­tho­ny (2:36.56) was sec­ond be­hind Bermu­dan Elan Da­ley (2:32.40) with Cay­man Is­lands’ Jil­lian Crooks’ third in 2:39.94 and Sa­van­nah Chee-Wah, of T&T sev­enth in 2:47.53.

And the oth­er T&T bronze came via Cait­lyn Look Fong in the 11-12 Girls 200m but­ter­fly in 2:43.79 while team-mate Amelia Ra­jack was sixth in 2:54.48.

Over­all, T&T lies fourth on the points ta­ble with 431 well be­hind lead­ers Ba­hamas (605.5) while Guade­loupe (456) and Ja­maica (444) were in close prox­im­i­ty.

To close out the top ten were Cay­man Is­lands (388.5), Bar­ba­dos (284), Mar­tinique (275), Bermu­da (245.5), Aru­ba (104) and French Guiana (102.5).

In terms of medals won, T&T has now bagged 34 (16 gold, 12 sil­ver and six bronze), nine be­hind Ba­hamas (17 gold, 18 sil­ver and eight bronze) while Guade­loupe 37 (ten gold, ten sil­ver and 17 bronze); Bar­ba­dos 24 (10 gold, eight sil­ver and six bronze) and Ja­maica 31 (nine gold, ten sil­ver and 12 bronze) round out the top five.
