University of T&T swimmer, Dean Miko Cruz etched his name on the record books producing the fastest ever 200m breaststroke swim locally. He accomplished this feat on Day One of the first ever ASATT Short Course Open Swim Championships, being held at the St Michael's Pool San Fernando on Friday. Cruz's time of 2.22.22 was faster than the January 1983 2.24.33 clocking of Paul Newallo. Ironically, Newallo is Cruz's coach at UTT.
Newallo's open national record however will remain untouched as Cruz is a national of the Phillipines. His achievement however has been designated as an all-comers record. On the final on Friday Cruz went a tad slower to win the final in 2.23.98. Singapore-bound Blue Dolphin swimmer Kimberlee John-Williams again showed her unquestionable class in the sport establishing an open record in the 800 metre freestyle. The talented 13-14 swimmer who has qualified for the 2010 Youth Olympics in Singapore, clocked 9:13.65 erasing her old age group and open time of 9.16.80 which she established in the same pool in May 2009.
John-Williams also equalled her 30.37 13-14 female record in the 50 metre backstroke during prelims on Thursday. Her finals clocking of 30.80 was still good enough for gold. Dylan Carter again entered his name the national records. This time, it was the11-12 50 metre backstroke record where he equalled the November 2008 record of Marlins teammate Keegan Boisson-Yates. Carter achieved a 29.66 time in the event placing him 2nd in the B final.
