Seven T&T athletes will be action today, the second day of the 13th World Junior (Under 20) Track and Field Championships which began in Moncton, Canada yesterday. Aleena Brooks, the 2010 double CAC Junior silver medallist (800m and 4x400m), will be the first to the track when she faces the starter in the heats of the women's 800m set to come off at 9.05 am (TT Time). The former Diego Martin Secondary School student and Memphis Pioneer runner, goes into the race with a personal best of two minutes 8.97 seconds. Brooks, who currently attends the University of Minnesota in the USA, was also second in the 800 and 4x400m events at this year's Carifta Games in the Cayman Islands.
Sparkle Mc Knight and Shawna Fermin will do battle in the preliminaries of the women's 400m from 10.35. Mc Knight (Neon Trackers) is the 2010 Carifta silver medallist in the event. She has a personal best of 53.96 seconds. The former Carapichaima Senior student has come of age this year and has ran under the World Junior qualifying standards many times this season. Fermin is a US-based athlete is representing the country for the first time. He finished second at the NAAA/Sagicor Championships clocking 54.41.
In the men's 100m heats set for 11:25am Sabian Cox (Humming Bird) and Shermun Allsop (Concorde) will be TT's representatives. Cox goes in the race as the 12th fastest junior of the year following his 10.35 clocking in finishing second at the NAAA Championships on June 26. Also going into action today is Ashlee Smith. The D'Abadie Progressive thrower warmed up for the event by taking gold in girls under 20 discus event at CAC Juniors. Deon Lendore (Abilene Wildcats) and Kishorn Dempster (Concorde) will contest the preliminaries of the men's 400m carded for 6:25pm. Lendore is the 2010 Carifta silver medallist and CAC Junior bronze medallist.
