Che Lovelace showed his class and ex­pe­ri­ence when he came out on top when the Surf­ing As­so­ci­a­tion of T&T held its 2010 edi­tion of the Na­tion­al Surf­ing Cham­pi­onships last week­end. In an ef­fort to max­imise the qual­i­ty of the surf­ing con­di­tions for its com­peti­tors, the event com­mit­tee made a de­ci­sion to hold the event at Rough­side Beach, Ba­lan­dra, mak­ing it the first time a Na­tion­al Cham­pi­onship took place a the lo­ca­tion. The de­ci­sion proved to be a great call as Moth­er Na­ture pro­vid­ed the anx­ious field with very good qual­i­ty surf and sun­ny weath­er at Ba­lan­dra.

Over two days of high qual­i­ty surf­ing, a to­tal of 30 surfers chal­lenged for five di­vi­sion ti­tles in the Men's Open, Ju­niors (Un­der-18), Mas­ters (35+), Long­board and Women. At the end of an epic week­end of surf­ing it was clear that every per­son that wit­nessed the event, surfer and spec­ta­tor alike, left the beach with one thing burned in­to their mind - "Che Lovelace Dom­i­nat­ed." He surfed in more heats than any­one and com­pet­ed in three Di­vi­sions (Men's Open, Mas­ters, & Long­board). He al­so had to surf through the Re­pocharge Round of the Men's Open in or­der to qual­i­fy to surf to con­test the fi­nals.

Lovelace surfed in 12 heats over two days while his clos­est ri­val Chris Den­nis on­ly con­test­ed six. Most surfers would con­sid­er this a dis­ad­van­tage for Lovelace, ar­gu­ing that he would peak ear­ly and be fa­tigued be­fore the main event fi­nals. To the con­trary, by the time the Men's Open Fi­nal came about Lovelace had the waves and con­di­tions un­der his con­trol. He won Open Men's cat­e­go­ry, to record his sixth Open ti­tle. He al­so has three Ju­niors ti­tles. This year he will add to his tro­phy cab­i­net the Mas­ters (35+) ti­tle the Long­board crown which made his the first surfer to se­cure na­tion­al ti­tles in three di­vi­sions at a Na­tion­al Cham­pi­onships.
