Mario Davis scored nine of his 15 points in a key fourth quarter run that helped Straker Nets to register a come from behind 76-73 win over Detour Shak Attack in the final of the 2010 North Zone Basketball League Knock-out Tournament. Straker Nets success was recorded at the Jean Pierre Sports Complex, on Tuesday night. This marked Straker's first title for the season and first at Zonal level for five years. Davis hit three baskets from down-town as Nets outscored Shak Attack 24-12 in the final period, erasing a third quarter nine point lead (61-52). Nets held a slim 15-14 lead at the end of the first period. However, the team from Dan Kelly in Laventille, led by Terrence Nedd who hit six three-pointers in his match-high 22 points, bounced back in the second quarter outscoring Nets 33-22, to take a 10-point lead (47-37) heading into the half.
The third period was narrowly won by Nets as they scored 15 to Shak Attack's 14. It was then do or die for the nets in the final quarter, and they responded well, holding Shak Attack to their lowest quarterly score of the match, to pull off the win. This is the second straight season that has fallen short in the finals, after going down to the Defence Force last season. Christopher Lares led the winners with 20 points, while Kurt Christian dropped 20 as well for Shak Attack.
Veterans retain Division II crown
Meanwhile Veterans led by forward Dave Marshall with a match-high 23 points, retained the Second Division knock-out title with a 66-63 win over HDC Morvant Crusaders in the first match. Crusaders enjoyed the better run for the first three quarters, holding a 48-43 lead heading into the final period. However, the Veterans turned the table and outscored their opponents 23-13 in the last quarter to come away with the come from behind victory.
