Dr Sandra Sookram has been appointed deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago for a five-year term effective July 13.

Prior to joining the Central Bank, Sookram held the position of Fellow at the Sir Arthur Lewis Institute of Social and Economic Studies (SALISES), UWI, St Augustine, where she served as its academic coordinator.A statement from the Central Bank said Sookram has a "prolific academic background through scholarly work in refereed journals and publications of chapters in various books.

According to the statement, a significant part of her career has been devoted to supervising students in the MSc and MPhil/PhD programmes at SALISES.

Governor Jwala Rambarran said: "Dr Sookram is an acclaimed multi-disciplinary economist with innovative, thought-provoking perspectives on economic development issues. Dr Sookram also distinguished herself on the UWI Campus for taking the time and making the effort to nurture young economists. Her career as an economist, researcher and mentor makes her particularly suited to join the Central Bank as Deputy Governor and to lead its research, statistics and financial stability functions."
