Polish gold for Walcott, Borel takes another third

Keshorn Wal­cott left Poland for Glas­gow, Scot­land, yes­ter­day, with a gold medal un­der his belt af­ter he threw 82.90 me­tres to win the men's javelin event at the 17th Janusz Sid­lo Memo­r­i­al, in Sopot.

Wal­cott dom­i­nat­ed the field, with the next best chal­lenger, Lukasz Grzeszczuk, man­ag­ing on­ly 76.46m. In third was an­oth­er Pole, Pawel Rozin­s­ki, who threw 76.46m.

Wal­cott is sched­uled to meet on­ly a hand­ful of those against whom he com­pet­ed at the Lon­don Olympics in 2012, at this year's Com­mon­wealth Games. The Games open to­mor­row, but Wal­cott will be in ac­tion from Au­gust 1, when the men's javelin pre­lim­i­nar­ies will be held.

The clas­si­fi­ca­tion round will take place the fol­low­ing day, just be­fore the com­pe­ti­tion ends.

His sea­son best stands at 83.94m, which he record­ed in Bei­jing, Chi­na, back in May.

Mean­while Cleopa­tra Borel, who threw 18.96m to place fourth at the Di­a­mond League meet in Mona­co, last Fri­day, re­turned to the field a day lat­er at the Sains­bury's An­niver­sary Games, in Lon­don, where she took third. She pro­duced a 18.99m ef­fort, be­hind win­ner Christi­na Schwanitz of Ger­many, who threw 19.92m. USA's Michelle Carter placed sec­ond in 19.80m.

Borel will al­so rep­re­sent T&T at the Com­mon­wealth Games.
