Penal teacher held for bribery attempt

Al­ready in trou­ble for drunk dri­ving, a Pe­nal school­teacher was ar­rest­ed yes­ter­day for try­ing to bribe a San Fer­nan­do po­lice of­fi­cer.The 45-year-old man from Pe­nal Rock Road was among 53 peo­ple who were ar­rest­ed dur­ing spe­cial an­ti-crime ex­er­cis­es that took place be­tween 6 am Fri­day and 6 am yes­ter­day.

Po­lice said the man was re­turn­ing home when he was stopped in the ex­er­cise led by Cpl Bar­ran and PC Sookhai. Af­ter fail­ing two breathal­yser tests, the man of­fered Sookhai $500, ask­ing him to for­get the charge.Sookhai re­fused and ar­rest­ed the man not on­ly for dri­ving over the pre­scribed lim­it for al­co­hol con­sump­tion, but for at­tempt­ing to bribe a po­lice of­fi­cer.Of­fi­cers checked the man's records and found that it was his sec­ond DUI of­fence.

Three women were al­so ar­rest­ed and charged, in­clud­ing a 28-year-old babysit­ter of Clax­ton Bay and a 32-year-old chef of Bam­boo Vil­lage, La Ro­maine. A 20-year-old store man­ag­er of Siparia was held for dri­ving with­out a dri­ver's per­mit. In ad­di­tion, 54 traf­fic tick­ets were giv­en out in 286 stops and search­es. Thir­ty-three oth­ers were ar­rest­ed on out­stand­ing war­rants for drug pos­ses­sion, rob­bery, lar­ce­ny and oth­er of­fences.
