The Penal Sports Association, founded in 1968, and involved since then, in the organising of competitions in various sporting disciplines, is still going strong, and is even more vibrant than ever, after 45 years of continuous sporting service in the southland.
It is the oldest Minor League in the country, and boasts of having 50-odd affiliated teams under its umbrella, not only from Penal, but coming from such neighbouring districts as Debe, Woodland, La Romain, Barrackpore, Siparia and Fyzabad.
In addition to football and all fours, the Penal Sports Association is the only Minor League in the country which organises cricket competitions in any given year at the Under 16, Under 19, Seniors, and Over 40 age limits. An annual ladies windball competition is also organised.
Speaking at the regular monthly meeting of clubs held recently, Leo Doodnath, President of the Association, a past teacher for some 20-odd years, a businessman for some 15-odd years, and now Chairman of the Siparia Regional Corporation, outlined plans for a gala presentation function to be held in July of this year, immediately following the end of this year's cricket season.
Foundation members, long standing clubs, present and past outstanding players, administrators, umpires and sponsors of the Association will be specially honored.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad- Bissessar, who in 1998 delivered the feature address at the Association's 30th annual presentation function, will be invited to again deliver the feature address at the 45th gala presentation function.
The Association's 2013 Seniors 30 Overs Cricket competition bowled off last Sunday with 20 teams participating at various venues.
