Dar­nel David of BIG South East Port-of-Spain men and the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies' Shushan­na Mar­shall were named the tour­na­ment's "Most Valu­able Play­ers" af­ter lead­ing their re­spec­tive teams to vic­to­ries in the an­nu­al T&T Vol­ley­ball Fed­er­a­tion Play­ers League.

This was on the fi­nal night of the four-day com­pe­ti­tion at the Ma­yaro In­door Sports Fa­cil­i­ty, Ma­yaro, on Mon­day night.

First up was the women's de­cider, in which the Saleem Ali-coached UWI in­spired by Mar­shall, who was al­so the com­pe­ti­tion's "Best Block­er," avenged a round-robin loss to Tech­nocrats by se­cur­ing a 25-23, 25-14, 25-22 vic­to­ry in the win­ner-take-all $5,000 de­cider.

When both teams met on Sun­day in their top-of-the-ta­ble round-robin clash, Tech­nocrats won 14-25, 25-16, 15-9.

SE­PoS al­so saved its best per­for­mance for last and led by David, the men's "Best Scor­er" bat­tled for a four-set win over pre-match favourites To­co Youths.

This af­ter To­co Youths de­feat­ing SE­PoS 22-25, 25-23, 15-11 in their round-robin du­el on Fri­day.

The loss was on­ly the sec­ond in sev­en match­es for To­co Youths, who end­ed the sev­en-team round-robin se­ries ahead of the fi­nals with a 5-1 record and win­ning five straight be­fore de­fault­ing against UWI.

Third-placed fin­ish­ers in the men's tour­na­ment was the T&T se­nior na­tion­al women's team, the reign­ing five-time Caribbean cham­pi­ons, which used the com­pe­ti­tion as part of their prepa­ra­tions for the Sec­ond Round FIVB Women's World Cham­pi­onship Qual­i­fiers from May 23 to 27 here in T&T against Bar­ba­dos, An­guil­la and Hon­duras, and the Pan Amer­i­can Cup in Li­ma, Pe­ru, in June.
