Trade Minister Vasant Bharath recently received a courtesy call from Huang Xing Yuan, newly installed Chinese Ambassador. It was the very first of the Chinese Ambassador's official Ministerial courtesy calls.
The meeting focused on the recent visit of the Chinese President Xi Jinping, particularly to discuss details about accessing the concessionary loan. The ambassador said he has an ambitious plan to improve the bilateral trade relations between the two countries, a goal that he is confident will be achieved in light of the recent Presidential visit. He said that T&T "is the most attractive economy in the Caribbean region".
Bharath spoke about the Government's interest in accessing the loan from China to assist with specific projects, including some in the maritime sector. The ambassador was accompanied by Liu Ying, Head of Economic and Commercial Office at the Chinese Embassy, while senior ministry officials sitting in on the meeting were Sandra Indar, Permanent Secretary and Randall Karim, Director, Policy and Strategy.
