Top junior swimmer Jonathan Gillette easily advanced in the Boys 15 and over 400metre individual medley as the Amateur Swimming Association of T&T (ASATT) Invitational Swimming Championships continued yesterday at Marlins Swim Club, Westmoorings.
Gillette, swimming in his home pool, stopped the clock in five minutes, 28.23 seconds. In the boys 15 and over 200m freestyle, there were no surprises. Jabari Baptiste and David Mcleod, who both represented T&T at the Carifta Swimming Championships in Jamaica earlier this year, advanced with the fastest times. Baptiste had the best time, hitting the wall in 1:58.51, while Mcleod also showed some form, finishing in 2:04.13.
In the girls 9-10 200m free, the national record was broken, when Jahmia Harley of Tidal Wave ended in 2:19.85, crushing the previous record. Cerian Gibbes held the record of 2:22.79 since 1993. Ashley Weekes (2:32.57) and Jada Chatoor (2:42.59) also performed creditably to advance.
Harley's clubmate Kael Yorke also broke a national record. Swimming in the boys 11-12 800m free, Yorke created history with his time of 9:31.78, beating the previous mark by almost three seconds.
In the closest race of yesterday's morning session, the top three in the boys 9-10 200m freestyle, finished within .57 seconds of each other. Nkosi Dunwoody won by a fingernail in 2:25.82, followed by Aqeel Joseph (2:25.86) and Lleyton Martin (2:26.39).
In the girls 15 and over 800m free, Syriah David proved her fitness over the rest of the field. David progressed to the next round with a time of 9:50.05, approximately 45 seconds ahead of the second fastest time. In the 200m free, David (2:15.80) had to settle for the second fastest time, behind Rebecca Marshall (2:12.94).
Medals will be up for grabs today from 9 am as the meet comes to a close.
