Jarrin Solomon and Hileen James were among T&T athletes who excelled on the weekend with gold medal performances. Solomon was in winners' row at the New Mexico Collegiate Indoor Classic in Albuquerque, Mexico, USA, where he defended his indoors 400m crown in 46.55, improving on the 46.79 clocking he achieved in 2011. Jovon Toppin took silver and was part of Florida 4x400 team which finished second (3:12:34) in the relay. Field athlete James of Georgia University captured the women's shot put at the Virginia Tech Elite Meet with a throw of 15.43 which she achieved in the third round.
Garvin Nero and Ayana Alexander grabbled silver medals at the New Balance Grand Prix at the Reggie Lewis Centre, in Boston. Nero (Baylor) took silver in the men's 1,000m. The former multiple Carifta champion clocked two mins 25.53 to improve on the bronze in 2:22:39. Nero then helped Baylor to silver in the men's 4X800m in 7:31:47. Deon Lendore's Texas A&M won the men's 4X400m in 3:07:98 with Ade Alleyne-Forte LSU team in second (3:08:50) and Zwede Hewitt's Baylor in fifth (3:11:33). Commonwealth silver medallist Ayanna Alexander was runner up in the women's triple jump with 12.94m, below her 2012 best leap of 13.68m. Renny Quow grabbed bronze in the men's 400. Quow was going for the second success for 2012 but had to settle for bronze in personal best time of 46.70. Taking the gold was the 2011 World Outdoor champion Kirani James of Grenada. The phenomenal 19-year-old got to the tape in 45.96 with Josh Scott of the US also finishing ahead of Quow in 46.54.
Reyare Thomas was second in the women's 200m at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational at the Devaney Sport Centre in Lincoln, Nebraska, crossing the line in 24.23 to finish behind Barbadian Mara Weekes (Nebraska) who won in 24.16. Thomas was sixth in the women's 60m finals in 7.60. Mikel Thomas was expected to contest the men's 60m hurdles finals but did not start. Sparkle Mcknight and Janiel Bellille finished 2-3 in the women's 400m at the Texas Tech Indoor No3 Meet in Lubbock, Texas. Mc Knight clocked 54.14 with Bellile behind in 54.83. The South Plains College pair was outdone for the gold by Grenadian Janelle Redhead (Wayland Baptiste) who won in 54.09. At the Meyo Invitational in Notre Dame, Indiana, Durell Busby claimed bronze in the men's 60m hurdles in 7.96.
