Old mas play to take the stage

"It's really theatre of the absurd," says playwright Ronald John in reference to his play, The Silly People Play Mas, which runs at the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, located at the corner of Jerningham Avenue and Norfolk Street, Belmont. The play is on stage on February 23-26, March 1-4 and March 8-11, at 8 pm nightly.

The play's cast include Errol "Blood" Roberts, Theresa Awai, Lylah Persad, Taromi Lourdes Joseph, Kyle Cox, Idress Saleem, Bendel "Sharky" Jack, Alvin Fortune and Dillon Jimenez. According to the playwright, it is an old mas drama with the obvious satirical content. The storyline is a stretch of the imagination but it is located in the reality of our time.

"The issues are real," says John, "the characters are real and their behaviour is motivation for the seemingly obnoxious manner in which I present them. "J'Ouvert in out Carnival is 'theatre of the absurd' and this play has absurd characters, so it's an old mas staging in a small space." John's previous play, Dance Me, Lover, received gala performances in 2009 at the then newly built National Academy for the Performing Arts (MAPA), in Port-of-Spain.
