Gordon Derrick was elected as the new president of the Caribbean Football Union (CFU) at its 35th Ordinary Congress held in Budapest, Hungary, yesterday. Derrick, who is the current General secretary of the Antigua and Barbuda Football Association received the support of more than half of the Union's membership during the election, which was held at the Boscolo New York Palace Hotel. "Rest assured there will be no marginalisation, discrimination or segregation under my tenure," said Derrick, who promised to steer the CFU into a new direction in his address to the members.
"We are all vital components of this Union, each and every member has a part to play and it is only through unity can we move the Union forward. "My friends, we have just witnessed a truly democratic election in this Union. This is the beginning of a new era; the elections are now over, let us from this moment being the reunification process." Yesterday's historic election has ushered in new blood into the Union at all levels of the executive committee wherein each member is serving in this capacity for the first time. The election brings to an end the tenure of the CFU Normalisation Committee headed by president of the Cayman Islands Football Association Jeffrey Webb.
