Sprinter Michelle-Lee Ahye intends to make the most of her sponsorship by energy company BP Trinidad and Tobago when she competes at the 2012 London Olympic Games from July 27 to August 12. "When I got the call saying bpTT was going to sponsor me for the Olympics, I was shocked. I couldn't believe someone wanted to sponsor me. This was all new to me as I never had a sponsor before. Of course, I feel very happy because this arrangement has helped me tremendously with my preparation for the biggest moment of my life," said Ahye, who is a member of the Trinidad and Tobago's Women 4 x 100-metre relay team.
A bpTT athlete ambassador, Ahye was speaking at the Bristow (Caribbean) facility at the old Piarco terminal on Wednesday where she interacted with the company's offshore crews. Ahye also distributed special Olympic tokens.
"I intend to put my best foot forward to make all of Trinidad and Tobago proud, including my sponsors bpTT, for their tremendous support. Right now, my management team is working with me to put everything in place for the games," said an enthusiastic Ahye. For Corey McKenna, a production operator with bpTT, the opportunity to meet an Olympic-bound athlete was an inspiring moment. "I felt a real sense of pride when I heard that my company was helping our athletes prepare for the Olympic Games. I am thrilled to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
"Our athletes need all the help they can get for the greatest challenge of their sporting careers. We wish Michelle-Lee and all the other athletes the best," said an emotional McKenna. The 31-member athletic team for the London Olympics are all being described as "Conquerors", based on Kees Diefenthaller's anthem "We are Conquerors", which was specially commissioned by bpTT in honour of the country's Olympic effort and the 50th independence anniversary.
BP Trinidad and Tobago is a sponsor of the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee and the Trinidad and Tobago Paralympic Committee. Its parent company, BP Plc, is the official oil and gas partner of both the London Olympic Games and London Paralympic Games.
