De Gannes leads T&T to 'lucky 7'

Jash­er De Gannes se­cured a to­tal of three medals while Ray J Thomas and Sha­neekah John­son got two apiece as T&T end­ed with sev­en medals, four sil­ver and three bronze at the Sev­enth Pre Cadet Caribbean Ta­ble-Ten­nis Cham­pi­onship which was held at the Uni­ver­si­ty of the West In­dies, Mona Cam­pus, Ja­maica from Ju­ly 20 to 25. In the Girls Un­der-11 Sin­gles, De Gannes reached the semi­fi­nal be­fore she was beat­en by even­tu­al cham­pi­on, Rosario So­r­angel of Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic 9-11, 12-10, 11-6, 13-15, 4-11. De Gannes was ear­li­er on a round-of-16 bye be­fore she de­feat­ed Guyana's Nevi­ah Clark­ston in the quar­ter­fi­nals while coun­try­women, Sha­neekah John­son and Ack­ay­la Lu­cas were stopped in the quar­ter­fi­nals re­spec­tive­ly. John­son first swept past Ja­maica's Em­ma Dibbs 12-10, 11-8, 11-4 but was then beat­en by Guyana's Salanas Jack­man 10-12, 8-12, 11-7, 11-7, 9-11 with a semi­fi­nal spot at stake while Lu­cas beat Kelsey David­son 11-1, 11-4, 11-7 but came up short against So­r­angel 5-11, 7-11, 8-11. In the Un­der-11 Girls Dou­bles, De Gannes and John­son had to set­tle for sil­ver af­ter los­ing out to Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's So­r­angel and Cas­tro 14-12, 11-8, 11-4 in the fi­nal.

In the semi­fi­nals, De Gannes and John­son de­feat­ed Clark­ston and Jack­man 12-10, 11-8, 11-5 while So­r­angel and Cas­tro stopped the oth­er T&T duo, Lu­cas and Shur­ja Welch 11-3, 11-4, 11-7. John­son and De Gannes had ear­li­er boot­ed Ja­maica's Evans and Mitchell 11-6, 11-5, 11-6 while Lu­cas and Welch blast­ed Guyana's Mar­tin and Bis­su, 11-9, 11-5, 11-8. In the Boys Un­der-11 sin­gles, Ja­keem Welch brushed aside Ra­heem Meu­lens of St Mar­tin 11-9, 11-7, 12-10 in the round-of-16 but then fell to Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's, the gold medal win­ner, Je­sus Lozano 6-11, 8-11, 8-11 in the quar­ter­fi­nals while Der­ron Dou­glas was stopped at the first hur­dle by Guyana's Tyriq Saun­ders, 10-12, 11-8, 9-11, 5-11. The lo­cal Un­der-11 Boys Dou­bles teams of Rober­to John­son and Welch and Mes­si­ah Wal­cott and Dou­glas were both de­feat­ed in the last-eight. Bar­ba­di­ans, Mar­cus Smith and Ra­mon Maxwell oust­ed John­son and Welch 11-8, 9-11, 9-11, 11-9, 13-11 af­ter the lat­ter beat Arubans Jean Hoek and de Lange 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-9 in the open­ing round, while Guyanese duo, Je­re­my Singh and Tyriq Saun­ders ac­count­ed for Wal­cott and Dou­glas 10-12, 11-5, 11-7, 11-8. In the Un­der-11 Mixed Dou­bles, Welch and Wal­cott won 11-5, 11-4, 11-6 against Guyana's Bis­su broth­er and sis­ter team; Welch and De Gannes stopped Ja­maicanas Sum­mer­belle and Mon­dell 11-5, 13-11, 11-3 and the John­son duo got past Guyana's Mar­tin and Rausch 11-8, 11-7, 11-9 while Lu­cas and Dou­glas fell to an­oth­er Guyana duo, Clark­ston and Saun­ders, 8-11, 11-7, 10-12, 12-10, 14-16.

How­ev­er, in the next round of match­es, Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's Mar­i­ano Lock­ward and Cas­tro boot­ed Welch and Wal­cott 11-4, 11-3, 11-8; Guyana's Jack­man and Singh de­feat­ed Welch and De Gannes 11-7, 11-9, 11-8 and Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic's Taje­da and Baez halt­ed the run of the John­son duo, 11-8, 11-6, 11-2. Girls Un­der-13 sin­gles en­trant, Nali­ni Boodoo had a bye in the first round of match­es but was then oust­ed by Ja­maican Ke­lice Sin­clair 11-9, 11-8, 7-11, 8-11, 7-11 while Ray J Thomas and Daniel Dick did not get past the first round af­ter los­ing to Es­mer­lyn Cas­tro (Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic) and Bar­ba­di­an Jazel Grif­fith 4-11, 6-11, 6-11 and 12-14, 11-6, 9-11, 3-11.

In the Un­der-13 Girls Dou­bles, the T&T and Guyana pair­ing of Lopes and Ray J Thomas was beat­en in the fi­nal by Guyanese top ranked pair Greaves and Homer 11-2, 11-5, 11-13, 11-9 for sil­ver.

Ear­li­er on, Lopes and Thomas de­feat­ed Ja­maicans Mc Laugh­lin and Sin­clair, 4-11, 11-8, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10 af­ter the lat­ter had beat­en T&T's T&T's Nali­ni Boodoo and Daniel Dick 11-13, 7-11, 15-13, 11-5, 11-6 in the last-eight.

T&T's Ko­ren Welch start­ed well in the Un­der-13 Boys sin­gles beat­ing Bar­ba­di­an Jahred Corbin 11-6, 14-12, 8-11, 3-11, 11-4, but that was as far as he got due to a 10-12, 15-13, 4-11, 7-11 lossin the quar­ters against an­oth­er Ba­jann, Tyrese Knight.

And in the Dou­bles, Ja­maicans Tyreik Thomp­son and Willough­by beat lo­cals Daniel and Welch 11-9, 12-10, 11-8 and Bar­ba­di­ans, Steven Payne and Tyrese Knight knocked off Gar­raway and Maxwell, al­so of T&T, 11-6, 11-5, 11-4.

Over the first two days of com­pe­ti­tion T&T gath­ered three medals in the team events, two sil­ver and a bronze.

In the Un­der-11 girls, T&T (Ack­ay­la Lu­cas, Jash­er De Gannes, Sha­nee­ka John­son) end­ed with a 3-1 record for sec­ond spot in the five-team round-robin pool be­hind Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic (4-0) while Guyana (2-2) was third while in the Un­der-11 boys, T&T (Ja­keem Welch, Der­ron Dou­glas, Mes­si­ah Wal­cott, Rober­to John­son) al­so got sil­ver with a 4-1 record with Do­mini­can Re­pub­lic, once again, first with a 5-0 record and Bar­ba­dos, bronze, 3-2.

The trio of Nali­ni Boodoo, Daniel Dick and Ray J Thomas took bronze in the Un­der-13 Girls with a 2-2 record be­hind Ja­maica (3-1) and Guyana (4-0) while the Un­der-13 boys quar­tet of Benoni Daniel, Ko­ren Welch, Joshua Maxwell and Jabari Gar­raway failed to medal.
