A 30-year-old T&T Regiment corporal who died at the Defence Force Headquarters, Chaguaramas on Saturday was strangled, an autopsy revealed yesterday.
The autopsy was performed at the Forensic Science Centre in St James yesterday morning by forensic pathologist Dr Eastlyn McDonald-Burris.
The post-mortem report stated that Lance Cpl Curtis Marshall died from asphyxia and dispelled earlier reports which infered that his death was the result of a heart or asthma attack. The report also revealed that Marshall had several marks of violence to his neck.
Investigators were said to have been waiting on the autopsy to continue their investigation and have now deemed it a murder and have enlisted the help of homicide detectives of the Region One Homicide Bureau.
According to reports, shortly after 9 pm, Marshall, a father of one of San Juan, went unconscious at the Defence Force's Tetron base. He was rushed to the Seven Day Adventist Hospital in Cocorite where he died.
Marshall enlisted in the T&T Regiment on August 9, 2004.
In a telephone interview yesterday evening, Marshall's brother Dennis said that his family would be seeking justice for his brother.
Dennis also asked that the investigation be closely monitored to prevent an alleged "cover-up." The family has also expressed desire to take legal action against the T&T Defence Force.
