I am ex­treme­ly trou­bled by the spate of po­lice killings re­port­ed in Trinidad and To­ba­go over the last few years es­pe­cial­ly with­in the last 12 months.I am not in a po­si­tion to pro­vide sta­tis­tics but fre­quent news­pa­per re­ports of killings of cit­i­zens by po­lice, is cause for alarm. Sure­ly there must be mod­ern meth­ods of train­ing and the avail­abil­i­ty of so­phis­ti­cat­ed tools to en­able po­lice­of­fi­cers to dis­arm ban­dits and po­ten­tial killers with­out shoot­ing to kill. A quick scan of re­ports from oth­er coun­tries sug­gests that our rates are ex­tra­or­di­nar­i­ly high and in­deed such killings are rare or non-ex­is­tent in most west­ern de­vel­oped and in sev­er­al de­vel­op­ing coun­tries.
