The Sweet So­ca Man, Baron, this year cel­e­brates his 40th an­niver­sary on stage, hav­ing en­joyed a ster­ling ca­reer that sees him to­day en­joy­ing the sta­tus of liv­ing leg­end.Baron's unique vo­cals have been de­fined as be­ing "hon­ey-dipped" by en­ter­tain­ment jour­nal­ists and mu­sic crit­ics, while his con­sum­mate style and stage per­sona has, for years, been send­ing au­di­ences around the world, es­pe­cial­ly women, wild.On Au­gust 19 and 20, Randy Glas­gow Pro­duc­tions (RGP) will present the na­tion with an In­de­pen­dence gift in So­ca Pas­sion: The Baron 40th An­niver­sary Con­cert at the Na­tion­al Acad­e­my for the Per­form­ing Arts (NA­PA), Port-of-Spain, and at Gold­en Star En­ter­tain­ment Com­plex, To­ba­go on Au­gust 21.Ac­com­pa­ny­ing Baron on stage will be ace mu­si­cian, Pel­ham God­dard and the band Roots Ca­lyp­so Or­ches­tra, while the line-up of guests per­form­ers will in­clude Scrunter and John­ny King, with co­me­di­an Tom­my Joseph serv­ing as the host.

The first peo­ple to have their artiste cho­sen will re­ceive com­pli­men­ta­ry tick­ets to the event.Born Tim­o­thy Watkins, Baron grew up at Bam­boo Vil­lage, La Ro­maine, where he at­tend­ed the Ram­bert EC School, and lat­er the San Fer­nan­do Tech­ni­cal In­sti­tute where he did evening class­es.As a boy Baron sang Bap­tist spir­i­tu­als with his par­ents at the church they led, and he soon be­gan singing at var­i­ous com­mu­ni­ty events.Baron won the Scout­ing for Tal­ent com­pe­ti­tion dur­ing the ear­ly 1970s. He be­gan his ca­lyp­so ca­reer in 1971, af­ter be­ing in­tro­duced to the man­age­ment of the Orig­i­nal Young Brigade ca­lyp­so tent by his long-time friend, Lord Shorty, who al­so gave the fledg­ling ca­lyp­son­ian the so­bri­quet, The Baron.Shorty al­so penned Baron's first hit, Se­vere Lick­ing­Not long af­ter his ini­tial suc­cess in the ca­lyp­so are­na, Baron dis­ap­peared from the scene for some 13 years, re­turn­ing sud­den­ly in 1984 with the smash hit sin­gles, The Jam­mer and Feel­ing It.
