Film-maker Mariel Brown allowed a first look at her ambitious new project, Inward Hunger, on September 14.Invited guests were treated to a private screening of part one of the film, at the auditorium of the Eric Williams Financial Complex, Port-of-Spain.The location was most appropriate, as the movie tells the story of the life of this country's first Prime Minister, Dr Eric Williams.Brown, who copped the prize for Best T&T Film at the Trinidad and Tobago Film Festival with The Solitary Alchemist in 2009, welcomed guests, along with representatives from First Citizens Bank (FCB), Government Information Services Ltd (GISL) and the Trinidad and Tobago Film Company (TTFC), all of which had lent financial support to the project. After a reception, Sharon Christopher, deputy CEO of FCB, congratulated Brown and said the bank was happy to be affiliated with the film, as it celebrated its 18th year, fulfilling Williams' vision for "a truly local bank". Andy Johnson, CEO of GISL, noted that it was his predecessor, Maxie Cuffie, who had given Brown's film the green light, but added that he was pleased to see CISL invest in a "culture of national pride". He said the work would be aired, along with other patriotic fare, on Channel 4 on Republic Day, September 24.
Brown spoke last, saying that it was when her late father, the writer Wayne Brown, described Williams as a "tragic figure", that she first became curious about his life. She noted that when it came to the topic of Dr Eric Williams, there seemed to be "no middle ground", and that most people had very favourable or unfavourable opinions about the man known as the "Father of the Nation".The piece features some charming social and political footage from the period, interviews with people who knew Williams, as well as writings by Williams and others, read "in character" by actors Nigel Scott, Catherine Emmanuel and Albert Laveau as Williams. The script was written by Alake Pilgrim and the piece was scored by Francesco Emmanuel. She thanked her sponsors, as well as her team, Savant Ltd, for their hard work in putting together interviews, and archival photos to re-create a "vivid picture of Trinidad in the 60s".
• Part 1 of Inward Hunger by Mariel Brown will be aired on TV Channel 4 at at 1 pm.
