Jazz At The Top 2011, scheduled for Saturday on the San Fernando Hill under the patronage of the Mayor of San Fernando, has been cancelled. The San Fernando Jazz Festival's organising committee decided to shelve its plans for its eight edition, entitled New Horizons. Chairman/artistic director Rudolph Thomas said the committee met recently to examine the implications of the extended state of emergency on this year's presentation. They concluded that the constraints imposed by the curfew would have a deleterious effect on various critical aspects of the production, thereby affecting its viability.
The committee has apologised to its fans. The San Fernando Jazz Festival had its birth in 2004 and was the brainchild of southern cultural impresario Dawad Phillip as part of a co-initiative-Sando Alive-with the San Fernando City Corporation to re-establish San Fernando in the cultural spotlight as an entertainment centre. The event also was designed to coincide with San Fernando City Week celebrations next month. Over the years, the festival has showcased an impressive entertainment lineup of local, regional and international artistes with fans putting all aside to make the trek up the majestic San Fernando Hill, the home of the festival.
