The Na­tion­al Pri­ma­ry Schools Crick­et League (NPSCL) Ex­ec­u­tive has been re-en­er­gised fol­low­ing the elec­tion of Ian Ram­lal to the post of in­ter­im Pres­i­dent fol­low­ing a by-elec­tion at the Na­tion­al Crick­et Acad­e­my in Bal­main, Cou­va on Thurs­day. The NPSCL Ex­ec­u­tive is re­spon­si­ble for the or­gan­i­sa­tion and man­age­ment of all pri­ma­ry schools crick­et, which saw the par­tic­i­pa­tion of 700 schools, in­volv­ing over 6,000 boys and girls, in sev­er­al com­pe­ti­tions last year. The league's pres­ti­gious Su­per League has pro­duced such tal­ent as na­tion­al and West In­dies youth crick­et play­ers Stephen Kat­wa­roo and Bri­an Christ­mas.

Ram­lal, who is prin­ci­pal of the San Fran­cique Pres­by­ter­ian School, wast­ed no time in set­ting the tone for his tenure: "I see the pri­ma­ry school lev­el as a crit­i­cal stage for the un­earthing and nur­tur­ing of na­tion­al and re­gion­al crick­et­ing tal­ent. My ob­jec­tive is to de­vel­op the phys­i­cal, psy­cho­log­i­cal and tech­ni­cal skills of the young play­ers. I don't just want them to be great play­ers; they must be­come schol­ars of the game as well," he said af­ter his elec­tion.

The by-elec­tion be­came nec­es­sary when pre­vi­ous pres­i­dent, Mar­tin Lum Kin, had to demit the post as a re­sult of his elec­tion as Third Vice-Pres­i­dent of the Trinidad and To­ba­go Uni­fied Teach­ers As­so­ci­a­tion (TTUTA) last Oc­to­ber. Ram­lal holds of­fice un­til Oc­to­ber, 2011, when elec­tions will be held for all posts in the ex­ec­u­tive. An ac­tive mem­ber of the NPSCL for the past two years, Ram­lal has a long his­to­ry of crick­et in­volve­ment, hav­ing cap­tained the Iere High School crick­et team for three years, and rep­re­sent­ed the South-West Re­gion at the un­der-19 lev­el. He is the cur­rent chair­man of the St. Patrick Ed­u­ca­tion Dis­trict Crick­et Com­mit­tee.

An­tho­ny Ramjit, School Su­per­vi­sor I and Pub­lic Re­la­tions Of­fi­cer of the NPSCL, was high in praise of the new­ly elect­ed pres­i­dent. "I be­lieve that Ian has the en­er­gy and the vi­sion that will take this or­gan­i­sa­tion for­ward. The oth­er mem­bers of the Ex­ec­u­tive will work with him in cre­at­ing an en­vi­ron­ment where boys and girls gain ex­po­sure to com­pet­i­tive crick­et while hav­ing fun and pro­mot­ing health lifestyles," Ramjit said.
