The National Primary Schools Cricket League (NPSCL) Executive has been re-energised following the election of Ian Ramlal to the post of interim President following a by-election at the National Cricket Academy in Balmain, Couva on Thursday. The NPSCL Executive is responsible for the organisation and management of all primary schools cricket, which saw the participation of 700 schools, involving over 6,000 boys and girls, in several competitions last year. The league's prestigious Super League has produced such talent as national and West Indies youth cricket players Stephen Katwaroo and Brian Christmas.
Ramlal, who is principal of the San Francique Presbyterian School, wasted no time in setting the tone for his tenure: "I see the primary school level as a critical stage for the unearthing and nurturing of national and regional cricketing talent. My objective is to develop the physical, psychological and technical skills of the young players. I don't just want them to be great players; they must become scholars of the game as well," he said after his election.
The by-election became necessary when previous president, Martin Lum Kin, had to demit the post as a result of his election as Third Vice-President of the Trinidad and Tobago Unified Teachers Association (TTUTA) last October. Ramlal holds office until October, 2011, when elections will be held for all posts in the executive. An active member of the NPSCL for the past two years, Ramlal has a long history of cricket involvement, having captained the Iere High School cricket team for three years, and represented the South-West Region at the under-19 level. He is the current chairman of the St. Patrick Education District Cricket Committee.
Anthony Ramjit, School Supervisor I and Public Relations Officer of the NPSCL, was high in praise of the newly elected president. "I believe that Ian has the energy and the vision that will take this organisation forward. The other members of the Executive will work with him in creating an environment where boys and girls gain exposure to competitive cricket while having fun and promoting health lifestyles," Ramjit said.
