As Trinidad and To­ba­go bids farewell to the Mighty Spar­row to­day, the mem­o­ries of a mu­si­cal gi­ant live on through the per­for­mances that cap­ti­vat­ed gen­er­a­tions.

These pho­tographs, drawn from the Trinidad Guardian archives, most­ly from the 1980s, tell the sto­ry of a ca­lyp­son­ian whose com­mand­ing stage pres­ence, un­mis­tak­able voice and lyri­cal bril­liance helped shape the sound and spir­it of the Caribbean.

They pre­serve mo­ments of a re­mark­able ca­reer in which The Mighty Spar­row en­ter­tained, pro­voked thought, chal­lenged au­thor­i­ty and gave voice to the ex­pe­ri­ences of or­di­nary peo­ple.

As fam­i­ly, friends, fel­low artistes and fans gath­er to pay their fi­nal re­spects, we look back at the stages where the undis­put­ed Ca­lyp­so King of the World made his­to­ry, re­mind­ing us that while the man may be laid to rest, his mu­sic and lega­cy will en­dure.
