Forged from the Love of Lib­er­ty is the na­tion­al an­them of Trinidad and To­ba­go.

Orig­i­nal­ly com­posed as the na­tion­al an­them for the short-lived West In­dies Fed­er­a­tion, this song was edit­ed and adopt­ed by the is­land of Trinidad and To­ba­go when it gained its in­de­pen­dence in 1962.

It was writ­ten and com­posed by Patrick S Castagne, Guyanese by birth but of Trinidad Her­itage.

Pat Castagne was born in British Guiana to Trinida­di­an parent­age.

What very few know is that the orig­i­nal draft of the first line was “Born in the bonds of slav­ery”.

Ver­non Evans, Welsh com­pos­er and, at that time, the ap­point­ed mu­sic of­fi­cer to the Colo­nial Gov­ern­ment of Trinidad and To­ba­go, and to whom Pat took his ini­tial draft, felt that that par­tic­u­lar line in fact rep­re­sent­ed the his­to­ry of on­ly one eth­nic group of our mul­ti-eth­nic so­ci­ety.

Pat rewrote the line, re­sult­ing in the lyrics that we all now know...FORGED FROM THE LOVE OF LIB­ER­TY.

Patrick Stanis­laus “Pat” Castagne was award­ed the Cha­co­nia Gold medal in 1979.
