Javon Murray guided Morvant Anglican to the Primary School to a successful defence of their title in this year’s National Junior Parang Festival at the Bishop Anstey High School, Port-of-Spain, on Saturday.
Murray and his schoolmates delivered a stirring rendition of Vamos a Belén to get the judges’ nod ahead of 21 other schools in the competition.
Morvant Anglican earned 90.5 of a possible 100 points, well ahead of Sacred Heart Girls’ RC (86.5 pts), who performed Bienvenido Niño Divino and St Peter’s RC and Nelson Street Boys’ RC, who finished joint third with 76.5 points, for their renditions of El Gran Nacimiento and El Angel Gabriel respectively.
In guiding Morvant Anglican to the title, Murray also copped the Best Male Vocalist title for his clear and smooth delivery, the Best Stage Presentation and Best Dressed awards.
The Best Female Vocalist title went to Sacred Heart Girls’ Azariah Frederick. The annual event, which celebrates T&T’s Christmas tradition of parang with the younger generation, drew more primary school bands this year and continued yesterday with the Secondary Schools competition.
