Shenelle Sahadeo’s first solo exhibition, Diversity: Trinidad and Tobago Is A Real Place, takes place at Arnim’s Art Galleria, 52 Bamboo Bay Road, La Romain, from November 29-December 2.
An artist for more than eight years, Sahadeo said she has always been inspired by and interested in T&T’s rich cultural heritage.
“My exhibition aims at capturing the reality of our identity, which in itself is quite unique and heavily influenced by a variety of traditions, religions, ethnicities, cultural and historical backgrounds derived from our multicultural society,” she said.
Her paintings capture religious landmarks and old Victorian-style structures, as well as T&T’s natural environment and colourful Carnival characters.
“A bit of each is reflected in ‘Diversity’, and the four-day show is a gathering of the majority of my life’s work,” she revealed.
Sahadeo realised she loved to draw at age five and was self-taught at first, then went on to further develop her natural talent with her studies at the CSEC, CAPE and BA levels. She produces her art working with charcoal, acrylic paint, oil and chalk pastels, and recyclable materials.
Her pieces have been featured in group exhibitions at the National Museum and Art Gallery, Parliament’s Rotunda Gallery and the NCIC Heritage Cultural Divali Art Exhibition.
