Stu­dents of St Joseph’s Con­vent San Fer­nan­do (SJCSF) lit up the stage on Feb­ru­ary 27, proud­ly dis­play­ing their tal­ents to an en­thu­si­as­tic au­di­ence of par­ents dur­ing the school’s an­nu­al Open Day cel­e­bra­tions. With con­fi­dence and joy, the young ladies trans­formed the au­di­to­ri­um in­to a vi­brant dis­play of cre­ativ­i­ty, dis­ci­pline, and pas­sion.

The show­case was the cul­mi­na­tion of an in­ten­sive sev­en-week pro­gramme de­signed to nur­ture tal­ent and build prac­ti­cal ex­per­tise. Through­out the project, stu­dents en­gaged in fo­cused train­ing ses­sions, de­vel­op­ing new skills, crafts, or dis­ci­plines, of­ten step­ping out­side their com­fort zones to dis­cov­er hid­den strengths.

From archery and ta­ble ten­nis to taek­won­do, in­tro to graph­ic de­sign, first aid and CPR, hip-hop dance, afrobeats/folk dance, sign lan­guage, mod­el­ling, make­up artistry, and DJing, the pro­gramme of­fered a wide range of op­por­tu­ni­ties—re­flect­ing the school’s com­mit­ment to holis­tic stu­dent de­vel­op­ment. Dur­ing the live pre­sen­ta­tions, stu­dents ra­di­at­ed con­fi­dence, bring­ing their new­ly ac­quired skills to life be­fore a proud and sup­port­ive au­di­ence.

Ad­dress­ing par­ents, prin­ci­pal Joanne Bak­er said, “Our tra­di­tion of Projects be­gan many years ago and has since be­come a hall­mark of ex­cel­lence at our school—a prac­tice that has in­spired oth­er in­sti­tu­tions to fol­low suit.

“This ini­tia­tive en­sures our stu­dents grad­u­ate with a di­verse set of doc­u­ment­ed skills, com­ple­ment­ing their aca­d­e­m­ic cre­den­tials. Whether a stu­dent spends two, five, or sev­en years at SJCSF, each has the chance to learn some­thing new—a skill, craft, or dis­ci­pline they might not oth­er­wise ex­pe­ri­ence out­side of school hours.”

Bak­er added, “Over the years, stu­dents have learned to play the gui­tar and key­board, dis­cov­ered the ben­e­fits of fit­ness through aer­o­bics and weight train­ing, and ex­plored a wide range of dance styles, from ball­room and Latin to In­di­an dance. We have al­so ex­pe­ri­enced the ex­cite­ment of drag­on danc­ing, the rhythm of African drum­ming, and the prac­ti­cal val­ue of de­fen­sive dri­ving.

“To­day, we wit­ness the evo­lu­tion of this tra­di­tion with the ad­di­tion of an en­tre­pre­neur­ial el­e­ment—giv­ing stu­dents a path­way to earn an in­come now or in the fu­ture, should they choose.”

The event stood as a joy­ful tes­ta­ment to the school’s en­dur­ing com­mit­ment to ex­cel­lence, where tal­ent is nur­tured, skills are sharp­ened, and stu­dents are em­pow­ered to shine—both on stage and be­yond.
