Students of St Joseph’s Convent San Fernando (SJCSF) lit up the stage on February 27, proudly displaying their talents to an enthusiastic audience of parents during the school’s annual Open Day celebrations. With confidence and joy, the young ladies transformed the auditorium into a vibrant display of creativity, discipline, and passion.
The showcase was the culmination of an intensive seven-week programme designed to nurture talent and build practical expertise. Throughout the project, students engaged in focused training sessions, developing new skills, crafts, or disciplines, often stepping outside their comfort zones to discover hidden strengths.
From archery and table tennis to taekwondo, intro to graphic design, first aid and CPR, hip-hop dance, afrobeats/folk dance, sign language, modelling, makeup artistry, and DJing, the programme offered a wide range of opportunities—reflecting the school’s commitment to holistic student development. During the live presentations, students radiated confidence, bringing their newly acquired skills to life before a proud and supportive audience.
Addressing parents, principal Joanne Baker said, “Our tradition of Projects began many years ago and has since become a hallmark of excellence at our school—a practice that has inspired other institutions to follow suit.
“This initiative ensures our students graduate with a diverse set of documented skills, complementing their academic credentials. Whether a student spends two, five, or seven years at SJCSF, each has the chance to learn something new—a skill, craft, or discipline they might not otherwise experience outside of school hours.”
Baker added, “Over the years, students have learned to play the guitar and keyboard, discovered the benefits of fitness through aerobics and weight training, and explored a wide range of dance styles, from ballroom and Latin to Indian dance. We have also experienced the excitement of dragon dancing, the rhythm of African drumming, and the practical value of defensive driving.
“Today, we witness the evolution of this tradition with the addition of an entrepreneurial element—giving students a pathway to earn an income now or in the future, should they choose.”
The event stood as a joyful testament to the school’s enduring commitment to excellence, where talent is nurtured, skills are sharpened, and students are empowered to shine—both on stage and beyond.
