Vincent is derived from the Latin name Vincentius meaning "conquering." Eleven-year-old twins Tenique and Tyrique Vincent of Concorde Athletics give credence to their surname usually dominating their age group in the National Association of Athletics Administrations' (NAAATT) juvenile championships over a variety of disciplines testing their running, throwing and jumping ability.
Not only are the siblings double trouble in track and field, Tyrique has the ability to do several sports due to his athletic prowess, while Tenique is also a high flying champion in gymnastics.
They are the future of athletics and gymnastics in T&T.
The Standard Five pupils of Cunupia Government Primary School are role models to their school mates, well-disciplined, humble and polite and have above average grades in academics.
Tenique:
Speaking to Guardian Media at their school on Tuesday, Tenique said "When I was younger I used to do flips, dad decided I should do gymnastics. I started in a club, then he switched me to Tots & Tumblers Gymnastics Club, on Dundonald Street, Port-of-Spain, where I'm at level five, going to level six.
"My brother and I used to run and do races at home since we were four, dad enrolled us in ZC Athletics Sports Club, Cunupia, close to where we live, we're now with Concorde Athletics Club in Port-of-Spain.
"After that, we started to run 400, 60 and 80-metre dash, hurdles, 800 and he did 1,000. After we did 200 metres, we won lots of gold, silver and sometimes bronze."
She said it was not really hard to train and study at the same time; after they trained, they came home and revised their work.
Tenique said her training regimen consisted of four days of gymnastics on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and two days of running on Sundays and sometimes Mondays if she didn't have gymnastics.
She said her favourite subject was grammar.
Tenique's role models in sports are American gymnast Simone Biles and Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt.
She said she also enjoyed different genres of dance such as modern, ballet and hip hop.
Tenique said after she represents T&T's Olympic team in track and field and gymnastics she would like to be an actress.
Tyrique:
Tyrique, who was born first, said he didn't consider the training that difficult, he just liked it from young.
He said they even trained in the offseason focusing on their conditioning.
Tyrique said he participated in NACAC's (North American, Central American and Caribbean) championships in El Salvador on July 2019 in the combined events—long jump, high jump, ball throw, 1,000-metre run and 60-metre dash where he placed 11th overall, received silver in the high jump and bronze in the relay, and it was a good experience for him.
He said his sporting role model was the Olympic 200-metre and 400-metre champion American Michael Johnson because of his technique.
Tyrique's dream is to represent T&T at the Olympics.
Tyrique said they will be taking part in NAAA's cross country championships at the Queen's Park Savannah today.
He said they were also invited to Atlantic LNG's gold sponsors for the National Primary Schools Track & Field Development Camp at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya, yesterday.
Tyrique said he likes mathematics and did karate previously, some of his favourite foods are coo-coo, calaloo, stew chicken and rice.
Dad speaks:
David Vincent, the twins' father, a former track and field athlete and bodybuilder said his wife, Lisann, used to run middle distance and was tall at 5 feet, 11 inches.
He said from birth, he knew his children would be athletes and a gymnast—he bought Tenique a onesie bodysuit emblazoned with "my lil gymnast" and Tyrique began walking and running at six months.
Vincent said since the twins have been winning Victor and Victrix Ludorum at the PCS Nitrogen (now known as Nutrien) games in the under-nine category, under-11 winners twice, and won in the under-13 category last year.
He said he was hoping they will win one more time before they leave primary school.
Vincent said on May 6, 2017, Tenique did an impossible feat by winning the Caribbean Gymnastics Classic at the Hasely Crawford Stadium and the Naaatt Combined Championships at the Marvin Lee Stadium on the same day.
He said she was one of 12 gymnasts who participated in the Kindness in Action—The Children's Concert charity show hosted by Kids In Need of Direction (KIND) at NAPA on November 13.
Vincent said the twins will be writing the SEA examinations on April 2, 2020, and they both have their eyes on St George's College, Barataria, as they were not ready to be separated anytime soon.
Vincent said he did not want his children to forget where they came from—He aims to ensure they are good kids, well mannered and humble.
