$15,000 bail for men accused of hanging dog

Three men ac­cused of hang­ing a dog has been grant­ed $15,000 own bail.

Je­lani Samuel, Ayinde Wor­rell, and David Kingston plead­ed not guilty dur­ing a vir­tu­al court hear­ing in the San Fer­nan­do Mag­is­trates Court yes­ter­day.

They were charged with un­law­ful­ly killing a dog.

Com­mis­sion­er of Po­lice Gary Grif­fith or­dered an in­ves­ti­ga­tion in­to the in­ci­dent af­ter a video went vi­ral on so­cial me­dia of a man hang­ing a dog from a tree. Grif­fith said he re­ceived nu­mer­ous mes­sages and calls about the video.

The in­ci­dent took place on April 6 at Em­ba­cadere.

Un­der the su­per­vi­sion of Snr Supt Wayne Mo­hammed, head of the South­ern Di­vi­sion, the po­lice con­duct­ed in­quires and ar­rest­ed the three ac­cused ages 20, 24 and 32 from Em­ba­cadere.

When the mat­ter was called in the court around 11 am, the ac­cused, pros­e­cu­tor Sgt Harold Ish­mael, and the charg­ing of­fi­cer were present.

Mag­is­trate Anslem Le­an­der read the charge via video link to the ac­cused. Samuel and Wor­rell had crim­i­nal records.

They were each grant­ed $15,000 own bail on the con­di­tion that they re­port to the po­lice sta­tion every Mon­day by 9 pm.

The mat­ter was ad­journed to May 13.
