A 40-year-old businessman is this country's latest murder victim after he was gunned down while driving a van in Freeport on Friday night.

Police said residents of Mission Road reported hearing gunshots at around 9.30 pm and on checking saw that a white Isuzu one and a half-ton van crashed into the fence of someone's house.

The driver, Suresh Moonsammy (the owner of Big Wave Auto), was found with several gunshot wounds in the vehicle.

Officers of the Central Division Task Force were called in together with a district medical officer who declared Moonsammy at the scene.

Crime scene investigators found 18 spent 9 mm shells and four deformed bullets at the scene.

Moonsammy's body was taken to a funeral home for storage before an autopsy could be done on Monday, while his van was towed to the Freeport Police Station.

Investigators suspect robbery might have been the motive for Moonsammy's murder.

Region III Homicide investigators are continuing enquiries.

Moonsammy's murder brought the murder toll to 207, compared to 307 for the same period in 2024.
