Workers at Angostura shutdown the company’s operations today, one senior union officer has told Guardian Media, saying close to 300 unionised employees have downed their tools.
According to the union representative, the workers are protesting a last-minute decision by the company not to pay bonuses this year.
The SWWTU (Seamen and Waterfront Workers Trade Union) rep says the workers feel hurt by this decision, as there was no indication by the company of breaking what they call “tradition”.
The workers say they understand that 2020 was a difficult year for many but point out that they made sacrifices too—such as working overtime and changing shifts to help the company accomplish its pandemic goodwill.
The workers were hoping to meet with management today, and say they hope that good sense will prevail.
