Another prison officer has been arrested after he was found with contraband in his possession.

According to police, he was found in possession of 20 packs of cigarettes, two sealed bottles of liquids labelled ‘White Oak’, three cell phones and two chargers at the Carrera Island Convict Prison on Monday at 2.15 pm.

According to initial reports, the officer, who has over nine years of service, reported for duty and was subjected to a routine search during which the contraband items were found.

He was cautioned about the unauthorized items found in his possession, and officers of the Carenage Police Station were called in.

They escorted the officer to the station for questioning.

In a statement issued by the T&T Prisons Service, Commissioner of Prisons, Dennis Pulchan, said measures implemented to alleviate trafficking by officers will continue as they have proven extremely effective.

He, however, lamented that their unlawful actions cast a negative image on the Prisons Service but noted that “it is absolutely necessary to eliminate the rogue elements, as they negate the work of the hard-working officers and put lives of their colleagues at risk.”
