The Anjuman Sunnat-Ul-Jammat Association (ASJA) is distancing itself from the position being taken by the head of one Muslim group in a lead up to the General Election.

The group issued an official statement, yesterday, in response to statements issued by Ummah TT and the Muslim Federation, that they were throwing their support behind the United National Congress (UNC) and Opposition Leader Kamla Persad Bissessar SC.

According to ASJA's General Secretary, Rahimool Hosein, contrary to reports that Muslim leaders have thrown their support behind Mrs Persad Bissessar, ASJA remains apolitical.

Hosein said members of ASJA were not involved in Sunday’s meeting, which included officials from Ummah TT and the Muslim Federation.

He said while ASJA members were free to support any political party they wished, it was inappropriate for office holders to speak on the matter publicly.
