A second attempt at robbing a Penal supermarket flopped badly for a young bandit, who not only got caught red-handed but injured himself. The 22-year-old suspect had robbed the same supermarket at Penal Rock Road last month.
Unmasked and armed with a knife, he returned to the businessplace at 8.42 pm on Friday, minutes before the business closed, and announced a hold-up.
The two cashiers who were present at the time became afraid and ran out of the supermarket. They called their 49-year-old boss, who was at a temple about 500 feet away.
Shortly after, the proprietor arrived at the supermarket and saw the perpetrator stealing money from the cash register.
He raised an alarm and the suspect threw an object which broke the glass front door, then ran out of the supermarket.
As he made his escape while brandishing the knife, the suspect stumbled and fell on the ground, hitting his head and face. The proprietor and another person managed to subdue him.
When the police arrived, the suspect was still lying on the ground, bleeding from an injury to the right side of his head. The police retrieved a black-handled knife with a ten-inch blade and a knapsack containing $3,010. He was arrested and taken to the Siparia Health Centre for medical attention.
The suspect, of Seemungal Trace, Penal Rock Road, is expected to appear in court this week.
Citing security concerns, the proprietor requested that his identity and the supermarket’s name be omitted from this article.
