San Fernando’s main Carnival routes were largely free of debris on Ash Wednesday, but piles of household waste remained along some off-route streets.
Cleanup operations began at midnight, with crews fanning out across Coffee Street, Cipero Street, High Street, the Rienzi Kirton Highway and Independence Avenue. Workers moved through the night to clear the city before daybreak.
Most signs of the festivities were removed quickly, although a few Carnival stages and tents remained. The Building Maintenance Task Force of the Southwest Regional Health Authority removed plywood boards from the glass panes of the San Fernando Teaching Hospital as garbage trucks passed through the city.
Near judging points, banners fluttered above stacked garbage bags awaiting collection. Business owners and residents cleared drains outside their establishments.
However, at Westwood Street, piles of household garbage caused a stench. Guardian Media contacted Mayor Robert Parris and is awaiting a response.
