Police have dismissed rumours that Sheldon Sukhdeo, the brother of murdered gangster Sheron Sukhdeo, was killed and dumped in a field in Arima on Monday.
Social media has been abuzz with rumours of Sheldon's death yesterday but police sources said they have no official confirmation that he was dead. Investigators said they are still searching for him.
Relatives have remained tightlipped on the kidnapping.
Sheldon, aka Rat, was kidnapped by men pretending to be police around 5 am on Sunday. Police said he was liming with three men in Claxton Bay when a black SUV pulled up alongside them and a group of Spanish-speaking gunmen ordered Sheldon into the SUV and then drove off.
A call was made to the Couva Police Station and a team of officers led by Senior Supt Inraj Balram and Supt Daniel launched a manhunt. Officers from the Anti-Kidnapping Squad were also contacted.
Sheron, a member of the Muslim gang who funded criminal gangsters in Laventille, was shot dead on March 26. Following his death, his wife Rachael Sukhdeo lashed out on social media at Sheldon.
Last November, Sheldon escaped death in a drive-by shooting which left him nursing a gunshot wound to the forearm. Since Sheron's murder, Sheldon had been keeping a low profile.
On April 22, Joshua Plaza, of Savannah Heights, Charlieville, the man believed to have carried out the hit on Sheron’s life, was also killed. Two weeks later, Rachael’s brother, Phillip Bassant, was shot dead, a short distance from where Sheron was killed. No one has been arrested in connection with these murders but police said they were all reprisal hits. Rachael's house had since been transformed into a fortress with barbed wires and cameras outfitted around the mansion from every angle. It is believed that she has left the country with her two children.
