Police have discovered yet another large cache of weapons, this time in South Trinidad.
According to police reports, around 1.40 pm yesterday, officers from the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF), Guard and Emergency Branch (GEB) and the Canine Unit proceeded to St Croix Road, Princes Town, where they executed a search warrant at the home of a man and his mother.
Inside the house, the officers reportedly found four AK47 rifles, one DRACO rifle, three M4 rifles, five AR pistols, one Ruger Precision 308 rifle, 14 lower receivers, six rifle magazines, one pistol magazine, one flash suppressor and one round of 7.62 mm ammunition.
The exercise was spearheaded by Commissioner of Police Erla Harewood-Christopher, ACP Subero, Snr Supt Alexander, Snr Supt Elie and Supt Spence. It was co-ordinated by ASP Ramesar.
In October, police also made two major gun seizures in Santa Cruz. In the first haul, they seized 35 guns, 100 magazines and hundreds of rounds of ammunition during an exercise two and a half miles into the forest in Cangrejal Village, Santa Cruz.
The weapons included two AK-47 rifles; two Draco rifles; one M-16 rifle; two UZI Sub-machine guns; one Beretta Sub-machine gun; one Ruger 30 calibre rifle; and one Ruger Precision 50-calibre rifle.
Days later in the same community, officers found four AK-47 rifles, one 50cal Desert Eagle, one .45 Revolver, two shotguns, more than 150 rounds of ammunition, rifle magazines, an assortment of assault rifle parts, several items of police kits, four police bulletproof vests and blue swivel lights.
Speaking after the seizures in Santa Cruz, Harewood-Christopher commended the officers for their efforts in tracking and finding the weapons.
She described the discovery of the weapons as “historic”, and a testament to the ability of the police to fight crime.
Referring to the calibre of ammunition seized, the top cop said the danger posed by criminals was real and hoped the exercise had renewed a sense of hope and confidence in the police.
