Cops seize camouflage caps, clothing from retailer in downtown PoS raid

A joint team of of­fi­cers from the In­ter Agency Task Force (IATF) and the Cus­toms and Ex­cise Di­vi­sion found and con­fis­cat­ed sev­er­al bags of “cam­ou­flage” cloth­ing and ac­ces­sories at a busi­ness place in down­town Port of Spain on Wednes­day af­ter­noon.

Po­lice said they re­ceived in­for­ma­tion that the store which is lo­cat­ed on Fred­er­ick Street had sev­er­al cam­ou­flage items for sale.

The of­fi­cers vis­it­ed the store around 4 pm where they spoke with the pro­pri­etor and told her that the cloth­ing was pro­hib­it­ed.

Po­lice seized sev­er­al garbage bags filled with the items and loaded them in­to ve­hi­cles.

When Guardian Me­dia vis­it­ed the scene, short­ly af­ter the raid be­gan, of­fi­cers were seen speak­ing with the own­er of the busi­ness place.

One of­fi­cer said while the cloth­ing seized did not ap­pear to be of­fi­cial Reg­i­ment-is­sued equip­ment, they were cam­ou­flage print which was il­le­gal.

The own­er of the busi­ness place who is a Chi­nese na­tion­al was de­tained.

Po­lice and Cus­toms and Ex­cise Di­vi­sion are ex­pect­ed to view the cloth­ing seized.

Un­der Le­gal No­tice 33 of 1984, it is il­le­gal to “ac­quire, pos­sess, im­port or sell” cam­ou­flage pat­tern ma­te­ri­als un­less the Min­is­ter of Na­tion­al Se­cu­ri­ty cer­ti­fies that it is to be used by the TT De­fence Force.
