The San Fernando City Corporation has issued a clarification on its traffic control plan around the Skinner Park facility, following concerns from parents and guardians about school drop-off and pick-up procedures.
The Corporation said the plan, originally developed over ten years ago under former Mayor Alderman Kazim Hosein and later implemented by former Mayor Alderman Junia Regrello, has successfully alleviated congestion and improved traffic flow in the area.
Officials emphasised that parents are not prohibited from dropping off or collecting children on Park Street, particularly for younger pupils. However, prolonged parking on the street will not be allowed to maintain smooth traffic movement.
A designated drop-off and pick-up zone within the Skinner Park facility provides a safe area for parents to park, either to wait on-site until dismissal or to walk to the schools’ back gates via the paved pathway on the Skinner Park Second Class Grounds.
The Corporation said this measure aims to reduce the number of children waiting along the Rienzi Kirton Highway, which has caused traffic build-up.
Parents are urged not to park or collect children in the highway’s emergency lane.
The plan will be enforced with the assistance of the San Fernando Municipal Police Service, who will be present at various points in the school zone during mornings and afternoons.
The Corporation urged full cooperation with officers’ instructions.
Officials added that traffic flow will continue to be monitored, and the Corporation will work with schools and other stakeholders to explore additional ways to ease congestion and enhance safety for all road users.
