A 20-year-old Venezuelan woman was rescued and two suspects were held following a reported kidnapping near Kelly Village, Caroni, on Friday.
Police said officers responded to a call around 1 pm near Rainbow Supermarket, where a 28-year-old informant pointed to a vehicle leaving the scene and shouted at the officers that the occupants “now take my brother and them.”
During a pursuit, one suspect allegedly pointed a dark object resembling a firearm at the officers, who fired in his direction. The officers later intercepted a silver Nissan Tiida, registration PCL 1092. The occupants fled, leaving the victim behind.
Both suspects ran into nearby bushes but police later detained a suspect and with the help of the Central Division Task Force North, apprehended a second suspect. No firearm was recovered and none of the suspects were shot.
The rescued woman, identified as a cashier at Rainbow Supermarket, was unharmed.
Cop seize 42 kilos of cannabis, AR-15 rifle
Officers of the North Central Division Police recovered an AR-15 rifle and a quantity of cannabis during an intelligence-led operation in the St Joseph district on Saturday.
Police said the exercise was conducted between 11 am and 4 pm by members of the Area West Task Force, North Central Division Criminal Investigations Department Areas East and West and the Canine Branch.
The officers went to Caiman Road, St Joseph, where, while searching through a bushy area, they found three bags containing 42 kilogrammes of cannabis. The officers also found one rifle loaded with a magazine.
The operation was initiated by ACP Singh, Snr Supt Gift and Supt Jaikaran and coordinated by ASP Bharath, ASP Pierre, Insp. Peters and Sgt. Pamphile.
Investigations are ongoing.
Probe into claims of skeletal remains
Police are investigating the discovery of skeletal remains in Brazil Village on Friday evening.
According to police, a resident went to the San Raphael Police Station at about 6.30 pm and reported that he was at his home on Soriah Trace, Brazil, around 3.30 pm, when he stumbled upon the remains.
Officers later visited the premises but were unable to locate the remains because of poor lighting.
