Head of the Criminal Bar Association, Israel Khan, SC, says the group’s membership is largely unfamiliar with incoming Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro, but still endorses the veteran officer for the role.
Guevarro’s nomination was unanimously approved in the House of Representatives on Friday.
His name, along with that of ACP South-Central Wayne Mystar for the post of Deputy Commissioner of Police, was submitted by the Police Service Commission to President Christine Kangaloo and then forwarded to Parliament for debate.
Since news of Guevarro’s nomination emerged on Wednesday, some police officers and members of the public have questioned his background and experience, noting he was not widely known among the candidates for the position.
In a media release yesterday, Khan said that while Guevarro was not known to the association, Parliament’s unanimous approval was a strong endorsement.
“It is an indication that his appointment as CoP is based on his merit, ability and integrity.
“The Criminal Bar Association wishes him every success in the performance is his onerous duty and we unhesitatingly support him in his quest to keep Trinidad and Tobago safe.”
