A 52-year-old man from Beetham Gardens has been charged with the murder of a toddler who died from injuries sustained while in his care back in 2023.
Marvin Rugette, also known as Crusher, was formally charged with the offence following advice from Director of Public Prosecutions Roger Gaspard.
The charge arises out of the death of two-year-old Angelo Farrell, who was allegedly beaten while under Rugette’s supervision on November 18, 2023.
Police reports indicated that the child’s godmother took him to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, in an unresponsive state. She told doctors and police that she had left Angelo in the care of Rugette, the child’s godfather, at his home the day before.
Rugette allegedly told her that Angelo had fallen while jumping between a bed and a chair. However, doctors found that the boy’s injuries were inconsistent with a fall. Angelo remained unconscious until he was placed on terminal extubation and died five days later, on November 23.
A post-mortem performed by a pathologist at the Forensic Science Centre concluded that the child died from multiple blunt force injuries to the head and face. The pathologist said the injuries were not caused by a fall but were consistent with an assault.
Medical reports from paediatric doctors at the hospital supported the pathologist’s findings.
On Thursday, May 22, 2025, officers from the Homicide Bureau’s Intelligence Unit arrested Rugette. He was detained at the Besson Street Police Station until he was charged on Monday.
Rugette remains in custody.
