Cunupia woman charged after stealing $1.6m from her employer

A 48-year-old woman has been charged with 91 counts of Lar­ce­ny Ser­vant and one count of Em­bez­zle­ment, by of­fi­cers of the South­ern Di­vi­sion Crim­i­nal In­ves­ti­ga­tions De­part­ment (CID).

Ac­cord­ing to the TTPS, Nir­mala Tam­bie of Cunu­pia was charged with the of­fences fol­low­ing what po­lice call painstak­ing in­ves­ti­ga­tions con­duct­ed by CID of­fi­cers over two months.

A vic­tim re­port­ed to po­lice that dur­ing the pe­ri­od Jan­u­ary 1st 2022, and

Sep­tem­ber 6th 2022, a to­tal of $1,615,777.16, went miss­ing from his com­pa­ny.

He said he made checks of his CCTV sys­tem and ob­served a woman em­ployed as a cashier at his busi­ness place al­leged­ly steal­ing a sum of mon­ey dur­ing the pe­ri­od.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors pro­ceed­ed to the sus­pect’s home on Thurs­day, March 2 2023. There, they con­duct­ed a search which re­port­ed­ly re­sult­ed in a large sum of Trinidad and To­ba­go cur­ren­cy, a stamp and US cur­ren­cy be­ing found and seized.

The woman was ar­rest­ed in con­nec­tion with the find and the mat­ter and sub­se­quent­ly charged.
