DCP Intelligence and Investigations Suzette Martin remained on the job up to yesterday afternoon, one day after it was announced that a criminal investigation into allegations of criminal conduct against her was underway.
This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Allister Guevarro as he concluded a media briefing at the Piarco International Airport.
On Monday, Guevarro said the enquiry arose from her arrest of firearms dealer and trainer Brent Thomas in Barbados in October 2022.
Thomas—then 61—was arrested by a team of officers of the Professional Standards Bureau (PSB) then headed by Martin.
Guardian Media had asked then if having Martin still on active duty could affect the integrity of the probe, however, Guevarro maintained that the suspension of any police officer was squarely within the remit of the Police Service Commission (PolSC).
When asked again yesterday, Guevarro said the situation remained the same and deferred any further questions to the PolSC.
“All I will be able to tell you is that at this point in time Ms Martin is on active duty and that the Police Service Commission is the person, or the entity or the organisation you should be directing those questions to. Thank you so much.”
Guevarro had said the enquiry was launched after Thomas felt his treatment was bordering on criminal activity.
In 2023, High Court Judge, Justice Devindra Rampersad was critical of Thomas’ arrest, describing it as an abduction.
Guardian Media sent an email to the PolSC’s corporate communications officer yesterday seeking an update on whether Martin would be suspended and whether there were concerns over the quality of the investigation if she remained on active duty, but did not receive a response up to news time.
Questions were also sent to the President of the Police Service Social Welfare Association (TTPSSWA) acting ASP Gideon Dickson, but no response was received.
