A dispute over a cigarette led to the death of a 63-year-old man in La Romain, while a teenager was shot dead at his home in Tableland within the space of eight hours.
The victims are Deopersad Ramsaran and 18-year-old Travis Ramnath.
In the first incident, Ramsaran was standing in front of his home at Pond Street, La Romain, around 8.40 pm on Sunday about to smoke a cigarette, when he was approached by a neighbour living a few houses away from him.
The man asked him for a cigarette but he refused. The man then dealt Ramsaran several blows about his body and left. Ramsaran made his way to his niece’s home, where he told her what had happened and then he went home.
Police were contacted and the officers then interviewed Ramsaran at his home and went in search of his attacker. They met him a short distance away, but while they were speaking to him, they were informed that Ramsaran had collapsed.
The officers left and returned to Ramsaran’s home to help him and take him for medical treatment.
Ramsaran was pronounced dead on arrival at the San Fernando General Hospital at 10.02 pm.
When the officers went in search of the attacker sometime later, however, they could not find him.
In the other incident, around 4.30 am yesterday, loud explosions were heard at Ramnath’s home at Warwell Road, Robert Village, Tableland.
Ramnath was then seen running at the side of his home, where he collapsed. He was bleeding from several wounds.
The teenager was taken to the Princes Town District Health Facility where he died around 7.10 am.
Both autopsies are expected to be done at the Forensic Science Centre later this week.
Officers of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region 3 are investigating both cases.
