The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) announced a temporary road closure on Edward Street, Port of Spain, after a fire damaged a large tree, leaving it unstable and unsafe.
According to police, the fire occurred earlier today between Independence Square South and Wrightson Road. The Trinidad and Tobago Fire Service extinguished the blaze, but the base of the tree was completely burnt, creating a hazard for both motorists and pedestrians.
As a precaution, officers from the Central Police Station cordoned off the roadway and are on site directing traffic and maintaining order. Police confirmed that no injuries were reported and no nearby property was damaged.
The Port of Spain City Corporation has been alerted and a team is on its way to cut down and remove the damaged tree. The Trinidad and Tobago Electricity Commission (T&TEC) will also secure electrical wires that may have been affected.
